Abbey Art Centre

The Abbey Art Centre, the oldest folk art centre in the UK, is undergoing a significant full-site regeneration to revitalize its rich heritage and enhance its artistic community. This project unfolds in two distinct phases, beginning with the strategic development of four new homes. This initial phase was essential to secure planning consent and generate funding for the subsequent restoration of the entire site.

With the completion of the residential phase, we have shifted focus to the heart of the project—the Abbey Art Centre itself. The centre is home to a remarkable array of historical structures, including a 12th-century Listed tithe barn, a manor house, a covered arcade, and dedicated music and pottery studios. Many of these buildings are in a state of disrepair, and our task is to breathe new life into them while respecting their historical significance.

We are currently applying for planning consent to develop new artist’s studios with live-work facilities, which will complement a comprehensive refurbishment of the existing structures. The site’s natural beauty, characterized by its heavily wooded landscape, provides an inspiring backdrop for the regeneration efforts. Our aim is to create affordable art spaces that foster a collective, creative environment, ensuring the Abbey Art Centre continues to be a vibrant and integral part of the artistic community.
